The Ward

Ward bed

There are a number of different wards you may go to after surgery. You will be told which ward you are expected to return to either at preassessment or on the morning of surgery. A few of the potential environments to expect include:

  • A general ward: usually 6 bed bays with a shared shower room. Single sex.
  • A Nurse Enhanced Unit: a 4 bed bay with a shared shower room. Additional monitoring is conducted here. Occasionally mixed sex depending on demand.
  • The High Dependency Unit: one nurse will care for up to two patients on this ward. It is mixed sex but bed spaces are further apart.
